Tolosa Winery Tri-Fold Brochure Commission

Background from the Business Owner

Tolosa Winery, located in the heart of San Luis Obispo’s Edna Valley, is renowned for its estate-grown Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, crafted with a commitment to sustainability and quality. The winery’s owner, Robin Baggett, shares the vision for this project:

"At Tolosa, we create wines that reflect the beauty and heritage of the Central Coast. We’re looking for a tri-fold brochure that captures the elegance of our brand and invites visitors to experience our tasting room and events. It should feel luxurious yet approachable, appealing to wine lovers and event planners alike. We’re excited to see students bring our story to life!" – Robin Baggett, Owner

This commission offers students the opportunity to design a sophisticated marketing piece for a prestigious local winery, showcasing their ability to convey luxury and craftsmanship through design.

Brochure Text Content

The tri-fold brochure has six panels (three on the front, three on the back when folded). Below is the exact text to be included. Students must include all text but can adjust fonts, sizes, and placement to suit their design, pending approval from the “client” (instructor or mock client).

Process Guidelines for Students

To simulate a real-world design commission and build portfolio experience, follow these steps:

  1. Research the Client: Review the provided text and explore www.tolosawinery.com to understand their brand, audience (wine enthusiasts, tourists, event planners), and premium aesthetic. Note their focus on elegance and sustainability.
  2. Concept Development: Sketch 2–3 layout ideas for the brochure, emphasizing a luxurious, modern design. Present sketches to the instructor (acting as the client) for feedback.
  3. Design Phase: Create the brochure in Adobe InDesign or Illustrator, incorporating feedback. Use the provided text and include placeholders for high-quality images (e.g., vineyard landscapes, wine bottles, or tasting room scenes).
  4. Mock Client Review: Submit a PDF to the instructor for approval. Make revisions as needed, such as refining typography or adjusting image placement, to align with the “client’s” vision.
  5. Final Deliverable: Submit final files (InDesign/Illustrator + PDF) to the instructor.

Timeline:

  • Online Assignment: Complete the project within 1 week, allocating time for research (1 day), sketching (1 day), design (3 days), and revisions/submission (2 days).
  • In-Person Work: Follow the timeline set by the instructor, based on class structure and deadlines.

Tips for Success:

  • Use elegant, minimalist typography to convey luxury.
  • Incorporate high-quality, evocative imagery to highlight the winery’s beauty.
  • Ensure the brochure is visually balanced when folded and unfolded.
  • Document your process (e.g., sketches, mood boards) for portfolio presentation.

Design Notes

  • Branding: Use Tolosa’s colors (assume deep burgundy, gold, and cream for a luxurious feel) and logo (create a placeholder if needed). Reflect their premium, sustainable identity.
  • Imagery: Include placeholders for high-quality visuals, such as vineyard rows, wine pours, tasting room interiors, or event setups. Avoid generic stock photos; prioritize authentic, wine-centric imagery.
  • Typography: Choose refined serif fonts for headers and clean sans-serif for body text. Ensure hierarchy with prominent wine names and event details.
  • Layout: Balance text, images, and whitespace. Use grids to align elements. Ensure the folded brochure (8.5”x11” unfolded, 3.67”x8.5” per panel) is sophisticated and intuitive.
  • Tone: Elegant, inviting, and reflective of SLO’s wine heritage.
