The UPS Store Tri-Fold Brochure Commission
Background from the Business Owner
The UPS Store in San Luis Obispo is a go-to resource for shipping, printing, and small business services, serving the community with reliability and convenience. The store’s owner, Sarah Thompson, shares the vision for this project:
"Our UPS Store is more than just shipping—it’s a hub for small businesses, students, and residents needing professional solutions. We want a tri-fold brochure that showcases our wide range of services in a clear, approachable way. It should feel trustworthy and highlight how we make life easier for our customers. We’re excited to see students create something that reflects our role in SLO!" – Sarah Thompson, Owner
This commission provides students the chance to design a professional marketing piece for a well-known local business, demonstrating their ability to communicate reliability and service through design.
Brochure Text Content
The tri-fold brochure has six panels (three on the front, three on the back when folded). Below is the exact text to be included. Students must include all text but can adjust fonts, sizes, and placement to suit their design, pending approval from the “client” (instructor or mock client).

Process Guidelines for Students
To simulate a real-world design commission and build portfolio experience, follow these steps:
- Research the Client: Review the provided text and visit www.theupsstore.com to understand their brand, services, and audience (small businesses, students, residents). Note their emphasis on reliability and convenience.
- Concept Development: Sketch 2–3 layout ideas for the brochure, focusing on a clean, professional design. Present sketches to the instructor (acting as the client) for feedback.
- Design Phase: Create the brochure in Adobe InDesign or Illustrator, incorporating feedback. Use the provided text and include placeholders for high-quality images (e.g., store counter, shipping boxes, or printed materials).
- Mock Client Review: Submit a PDF to the instructor for approval. Make revisions as needed, such as adjusting typography or image placement, to align with the “client’s” vision.
- Final Deliverable: Submit final files (InDesign/Illustrator + PDF) to the instructor.
Timeline:
- Online Assignment: Complete the project within 1 week, allocating time for research (1 day), sketching (1 day), design (3 days), and revisions/submission (2 days).
- In-Person Work: Follow the timeline set by the instructor, based on class structure and deadlines.
Tips for Success:
- Use clear, professional typography to convey trust and reliability.
- Incorporate branded imagery to highlight services like shipping and printing.
- Ensure the brochure is easy to navigate when folded and unfolded.
- Document your process (e.g., sketches, mood boards) for portfolio presentation.
Design Notes
- Branding: Use The UPS Store’s colors (brown, gold, and white for brand consistency) and logo (create a placeholder if needed). Reflect their professional, customer-focused identity.
- Imagery: Include placeholders for high-quality visuals, such as store interiors, packaged shipments, printed banners, or happy customers. Avoid generic stock photos; prioritize service-oriented imagery.
- Typography: Choose clean sans-serif fonts for headers and body text. Ensure hierarchy with prominent service names and contact details.
- Layout: Balance text, images, and whitespace. Use grids to align elements. Ensure the folded brochure (8.5”x11” unfolded, 3.67”x8.5” per panel) is professional and intuitive.
- Tone: Reliable, approachable, and service-driven.
